      1. Website of Peter Bruce Herzenberg of London, England (since relocated to South Africa). Website is no longer functioning as of 7 Aug 2007. Copies of much of his data from the website in my possession. Source is LA for Latvian Archives. In regards to this individual:
Name variations: Sheine (Sheina), Chana, Gana, Hanna.
LA 009 shows b. 31 Aug 1857 in Libau, md. 1. Elkishik and 2. Levitan.

      2. Archival Research Paper about Herzenberg Family prepared for Harold Hodes 23 Mar 1999 and is report no. Nr. 3-H-2962, by Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs (Latvian National Archives), Slokas iela 16, Riga, LV-1007, copy of only page 1 in my possession but evidently other pages exist:
"In reply to your application please be informed that the recruits enlistment registers of the Jewish families belonging to the Jewish community in Pilten for the years 1842, 1848, 1854, 1871 (see app. No. 1-4), census lists of the Jewish families belonging to Pilten for the years 1898, 1899 as well as the birth records of the Jewish community in Libau (now Liepaja) for the years 1836-1853, 1854, 1857-1905, marriage and death recods of the same community for years 1854-1905, as available at our archives, contain the following information:
Rabbi Jossel (or Josiph) Herzenberg was a son of Elias Herzenberg from Pilten. He was born in ca 1815-1816, possible in Pilten. Since our archives keep birth, marriage and death records of the Jewish communites for the time period from 1854, when they started to be kept officially, it is impossible to confirm the dates fevore 1854.
Jossel's father - a Rabbi Elias - son of Joseph Herzenberg, born in ca 1774, died in 1842.
Jossel's mother - Chiene Herzenberg (maiden name not stated), born in ca 1780.
Jossel's wife - Dine (Dinne, Diene) née Iddelson (birth date is unknown).
      They had children:
-son Hirsh, born in ca 1836,
-son Lämmchen, born in ca 1843,
-son Elkan (Elkann), born in ca 1850,
-daughter Sheine, born on August 31 of 1857 in Libau (see App. No. 6),
-daughter Meriam, born on June 15 of 1859 in Libau (see App. No. 7).
Elkan - son of Jossel Herzenberg married Doris (Dobra, Doba) daughter of Aizik Dreyer, born in ca 1852. The marriage records of the Jewish community in Libau for the years 1870-1875 do not contain information on their marriage. The... [end of 1st page and my copy]"

      3. Len Yodaiken in his paid research report "The Herzenbergs of Piltene and Liepaja Latvia," 1 Jan 2000, names four children of Aaron Berman and Ghitta Levitan: Sara, George, Charles, and Becky.

      4. Updated research provided by Konnor Petersen 5 Nov 2023 with references to LDS FamilySearch:
I made a few adjustments to the following in Family Search.
Added children to the relationship of:
Sheina or Chana or Hanna Herzenberg - KGCM-D9C
      Moses Elkishik - 9V5G-MXG
      + Vulf
      + Lea
      + Josif
      + Dinia Rakhil
The relationship between Sheina or Chana or Hanna Herzenberg - KGCM-D9C and Levitan - KGCM-6Y2 doesn't exist in the records. There is a Leizer Levitan married to a Khana/Hana/Anna Gertzenberg. But the birthdate we have for Sheina or Chana or Hanna Herzenberg - KGCM-D9C, doesn't match the earliest birth listed for this couple, which is 1863. But Sheina or Chana or Hanna Hertzenberg - KGCM-D9C was born in 1857.
The notes include a record for Gita Levitan, daughter of Sheina or Chana or Hanna Herzenberg, who married Aaron Berman, daughter of a Leizer Levitan (There are two Leizer Levitans in the records - one married to Sara and one to Khanna, so there is no proof of relationship to Levitan - KGCM-6Y2) Gita Levitan was married in 1894 at age 24, so born 1870, which is only 13 years after 1857. Again, a problem for Sheina or Chana or Hanna Herzenberg's birth year of 1857, or her relationship to Levitan.
The records that I have seen show no confusion between the two names Khana and Sheine. I believe that they are not equivalent. Based on this, I believe that Sheina or Chana or Hanna Hertzenberg Hertzenberg - KGCM-D9C should be rendered Sheine Hertzenberg.
I've created a new Khana Herzenberg - GGSB-D2Z who is married to Leizer Levitan - KGCM-6Y2. I've added several children along with a few of the children's spouses and children.
