      1. Website http://mysite.verizon.net/vze3sbrn/Benjamin.htm accessed 19 Nov 2011, "Geneology Information - Applegates of Ocean County, New Jersey," prepared by Richard Kuntz, Allenwood, NJ (Updated - 1/2018); source abbreviations are explained on the website:
"David Johnson (Benjamin). David was enumerated in the Census of 1830 as a resident of Stafford Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of: David M: 1:0-5, 1:20-30, 1:70-80: F: 1:20-30, 1:70-80
David was born in the time frame 1750-1760 (as implied in the 1830 Census) and presumed died between 1830-1840 as he is not found in the 1840 Census. Being born in this time frame, it is possible that David was the son of Benjamin from Dover. At this point, that assumption will be made pending proof to the contrary.
David was listed as a member of the Fifth Company, Monmouth Militia during the Revolution (ref. Salter, History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties)
      Notes:
      (1) It appears that Benjamin's household, which is enumerated in the 1840 Census, is part of this household in 1830. Hence, it is assumed (pending further proof) that Benjamin is a son of David.
      (2) The death certificate for son Daniel (ref. Bk AA, Pg. 295) records father as David Johnson and mother as Rebecca.
The following is a transcription of an undated letter signed by Kenneth W. Richards, Head of the New Jersey State Library: The following has been correctly copied from the military records, formerly in the War Records Office, New Jersey Department of Defense now on file in the Archives and History Bureau: "Johnson, David - Private, Monmouth County Militia under Captains Randolph and Covenhoven; in active service under Captain Randolph, stationed at Perth Amboy, thirt-five days in 1776; on rolls, Captain Covenhoven's Company, 2nd Regiment, Monmouth County Militia in 1778, 1779, and 1780."
