    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. There appears to be some controversy about the name of the second wife of Joseph Loomis whether it is a Mary Chauncy or Mary Sherwood. Others also report "Shepwood." Some email communications are as follows:
      a. 9 Feb 2002 from Sonia Glines : "I have a Marriage book that I find to be quite on with what it is talking about, called New England Marriages prior to 1700 by Clarence Almon Torrey. I notice that a lot of people keep saying the second wife to Joseph Loomis is a Mary Chauncey. And then I notice a piece sent to the list from something off of Family Tree Maker referring to her as Mary Sherwood.
Dawes Gates, p 571 says Mary Chauncy (no source for the marriage itself, but he cites, Loomis Family, E. Loomis, 1875 & 1880; Boddie & Allied Families, 1918; Savage, and Stiles, History of Ancient Windsor, II, 432-4, for the article in general. None of which are contemporaneous sources.) Stiles, Hist. of Ancient Windsor, II, 433 says Mary Chauncey. It also says she was adm. Windsor church Dec., 1660 (O.C.R.) and d. 22 Apl., 1681 (note that he gives court records for her church admission and death, but not for the marriage.) However, there is an article on CD #179 (Family Treemaker) Genealogies of CT Families Vol II, entitled the Second Wife of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, p. 424 by Elisha S. Loomis of Cleveland, OH which states that he has never found any documentary proof for the statement that Joseph Loomis m. as his second wife Mary Chauncey. He goes on to state that "On page 39 of 'Some Early Records and Documents of and relative to the Town of Windsor, Conn., 1639-1703,' being a true copy of the private vital records kept by Matthew Grant of Windsor and published by the Hartford Historical Society in 1930, is this record 'Joseph Loomis married Mary Sharwod June 28, 1659.' A Mary Sherwood, born about 1639, the daughter of Thomas Sherwood by his second wife, Mary Fitch, had brothers Stephen, Matthew, and Isaac. The Mary Sherwood who married Joseph Loomis named three of her sons Stephen, Matthew, and Isaac." Mary (Fitch) Sherwood, the mother of Mary (Sherwood) Loomis, m. as her 2nd husband, in 1658, John Banks. In her will she mentions her children, Matthew, Mary, Ruth, and Isaac Sherwood, and "daughter" Hannah Lumis. Presumably, "granddaughter" was meant for "daughter" and refers to the Hannah Loomis bp. 8 Feb. 1661/2, d. of Joseph Loomis by his 2nd wife, Mary. Dawes-Gates is pretty well recognized as a reliable source, but without seeing the actual Grant Record, Elisha Loomis is the better source here, because he does cite a contemporaneous source. Elisha Loomis also mentions Daniel L. Sherwood and His Paternal Ancestors, 1929 and History of the Fitch Family, 1930, vol. 1 as sources for the Mary Fitch and Thomas Sherwood marriage, so maybe I can find something in there to support that marriage as well."

      2. Per 19 Feb 2002 email of Clyde Loomis > LFofA, P.O. Box 17, Denair, CA 95316: "The two wives of Joseph Loomis, son of Joseph and Mary (White) Loomis, as it is shown in the Loomis family 1908 genealogy, "The Loomis Family in America": Joseph Loomis (1), b Messing, Co. Essex, Eng., ca 1615; m/1 17 Sep, 1646, Sarah, bap 2 Feb, 1621, d 23 Aug, 1653, eldest dau of William & Phillis (Lyman) Hill of Windsor, Phillis's parents were Richard and Sarah (Osbourne) Lyman. Joseph m/2 28 Jun, 1659, Mary Chauncey, her parentage unknown. (Additional data shown but not pertinent to our business here.) These "facts" on Joseph's 2nd wife has long been a subject of much dispute, but there is also evidence that disputes the data shown for Joseph's first wife, Sarah Hill. We now believe that Joseph's second wife was Mary, dau of Thomas and Mary (__?__) Sherwood. Mary - mother of Mary who married Joseph - parentage/surname is unknown. See some of the debate on this subject as was presented by two of the premier historians of their day, Dr. Elisha Scott Loomis, and Donald Lines Jacobus, page 81 of my Loomis Families of America Newsletter and Research Bulletin, for July, 1985. Joseph's first wife - some data/references which help to sort out who she was:
1- The name of Phyllis Lyman's husband was William Hill/Hills, who lived Hartford, CT. Richard was the name of Phyllis Lyman's father. William Hill and Phyllis did have a daughter named, Sarah.
2- On page 301 of "Families of Early Hartford" by Lucius Barnes Barbour, he shows the family of William Hills and mentions that his name is on Founder's Monument. Under daughter he shows the following:
      3- "Sarah - d bef 1680; m William Ward of Middltn."
4- On page 581 of "Hale, House, and Related Families" by Donald Lines Jacobus, under the William Hill family of Hartford, CT, he shows the following:
5- "1. Sarah b (say 1633), d. at Newark, NJ, in 1691; m/1 by 1651 John Ward of Branford, CT, and Newark, NJ who d at Newark in 1684; m/2 Stephan Davis."
6- On page 501 Mr. Jacobus refers to the will of William Hills, Sr., dated 21 Feb, 1680-81, proved 6 Dec, 1683, in which "daughter Sarah Ward is mentioned." Note: Sarah Ward was living 1880-81, and by this time, according to the Loomis 1908 genealogy, Joseph's first wife, Sarah had died 23 Aug, 1653, and he m/2 28 Jun, 1659.
7- There was, during that period, another William Hill, living at Windsor, married to wife, Sarah, whose maiden name was Jourdain, and they had a daughter named Sarah. They were of Lyme Regis, Co. Dorchester, Eng., and came to America on the 'Mary & John,' in 1630. Sarah Jourdain was the dau. of Ignatius and Elizabeth (Baskerville) Jourdain. This William Hill settled first at Dorchester, later at Windsor, then to Fairfield, where he d. in 1649. His widow m/2 Jonathan Sowther, m/3 Edmund Greenleaf.
8- "American Marriage Records before 1699" by W.M. Clemens, shows the marriage of Joseph Loomis and Sarah Hill as 17 Sep, 1646, at Windsor, CT.
9- "Savage's Genealogical Dictionary" shows the following: "Hill, William, Dorchester, a man of note among the first settlers, probably came in the 'Mary & John,' freeman 5 Nov, 1633, was selectman 1636, and removed to Windsor, of where he was rep. 1652 and 3, and perhaps had Sarah who married 17 Sep, 1646, Joseph Loomis at Windsor, and possibly it was the later who was rep 1669."
10- "The Families of Old Fairfield" by D.L. Jacobus, Vol 1 Pg 280, shows the following under the children of William Hill and Sarah Jourdain: "Sarah, d. 23 Aug, 1653; m at Windsor, 17 Sep, 1646, Joseph Loomis."
On page 279, in connection with the will of William Hill, dated 9 Sep, 1649, proved 15 May, 1640, he shows: "Wife Sarah - children Sarah (has had portion) William, Joseph, Ignatius, James and Elizabeth" Note: No doubt Sarah had recieved her "portion" when she married in 1646. So, although we have been unable to find it in any original source records, we believe we now know that Joseph's first wife was, as stated in the 1908 genealogy, Sarah Hill, and that we have learned her true parentage - William and Sarah (Jourdain) Hill."

      3. The book "The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography," v. 35, p. 230, entry for Willis Henry Loomis (b. 1870): "His original American ancelstor, Joseph Loomis, came from Braintree, England, with his wife, Mary White, in 1638 and settled at Windsor, Conn. The descent from them was through Joseph and Sarah Lyman, Joseph and Sarah Bissell, (etc.).

      4. Per 9 Feb 2002 email from Ellen Baker : May 3, 1643 he had granted to him from the Plantation four acres of land, bounded on the north by his father's land, beetween 1675-6 he served in the Windsor Troop of Horse in King Philip's War and was granted 6s 8d "on war account," married #1 Sarah Hill (or Lyman) who died 20 days after giving birth to her fourth child. (Their children: Sarah who died as a child, Joseph III who married #1 Lydia Drake and #2 Abigail Gillett Borge, John who married #1 Mary [Clay?] and #2 Esther Gillett, and Mary who died young.) Joseph married #2 Mary Chauncey (or Sherwood) and had 8 children. (Their children: Sarah who died in infancy, Hannah who married Abraham Colt, Matthew who married Mary Gaylord, Isaac who died in infancy, Shephen who married Esther Colt, James who married Mindwell Drake, Nathaniel who married [Elizabeth?], and Isaac who died young.)

Of the sons, Joseph married Sarah Hill, 1645, and had two sons and two daughters. He married second, Mary Chauncey in 1659, and had five sons and two daughters. By gift of his father in 1643 he received a lot twelve rods wide, next north of Matthew Allen, on which he built. John married Elizabeth Scott, and had eleven sons and two daughters. He had his father's homestead. Thomas married Hannah Fox, 1653, and had two sons and two daughters. He married for a second wife Mary Judd, and two sons and five daughters. By gift of his father he received a lot twelve rods wide, east of the highway, between his brother Joseph and H. Wolcott, Jr. Nathaniel married Elizabeth Moore, and had seven sons and five daughters, 1655-1680. He bought the lot and house of John Moses on the west side of the street, directly opposite Joseph Loomis, Jr. Nathaniel was among the early settlers on the east side of the Great River. Samuel had two sons and three daughters, 1660-1670. He bought Mr. Witchfield's place. He removed to Westfield, Mass."

      8. Elias Loomis "Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America," update of 1875 edition published by Elisha S. Loomis, Berea, Ohio, third (1908) edition, chapter: "The Descendants of Joseph Loomis (1590-1658) in America," subchapter "First Generation, children of Joseph Loomis of Windsor, CT.," pp. 126-128:
"Genealogical investigations have been unable to establish definitely the order of the children of Joseph Loomis, and it is considered advisable to give here the conflicting evidence:
      Possible order of children:
      1. Mrs Olmsted, b. 1615, md. 1640. [Sarah]
      2. Mrs. Hull, b. 1617, md. 1641. [Elizabeth]
      3. Joseph, b. 1618, md. 1646.
      4. Mrs. Skinner, b. 1620, md. 1638. [Mary]
      5. John, b. 1622, md. 1648.
      6. Thomas, b. 1624, md. 1653.
      7. Nathaniel, b. 1626, md. 1653.
      8. Samuel, b. 1628, md. 1653.
Probably, however, the order was as follows:
      Joseph, b. 1615.
      Sarah, b. 1617.
      Elizabeth, b. abt 1619.
      Mary, b. abt 1620.
      John, b. 1622.
      Thomas, b. 1624.
      Nathaniel, b. 1626.
      Samuel, b. 1628."
      Concerning this Joseph:
"Joseph Loomis, b. Messing, Co. Essex, England, a. 1615,; m. 1st, Sept. 17, 1646, Sarah, bapt. Feb. 2, 1621, d. Aug. 23, 1653, eldest dau. of Wm. and Phillis (dau. of Richard and Sarah (Osborne) Lyman, who emigrated from High Onger, Co. Essex, Eng., 1631) Hill, of Windsor; m. 2nd, June 28, 1659, Mary Chauncey, who d. Apr. 22, 1681. Her parentage is not known. The History of the Treman Family in America, p. 1688, places her as the dau. of Pres. Charles Chauncey of Harvard, but this is doubted - at least, no conclusive evidence has ever been found. Neither does Judith Chauncey, spinster, the half-sister of Pres. Charles, mention her in her will dated Dec., 1657, proven March 1, 1657-8 (see Waters' Gleanings, Vol. I, pp 107-8), wherein she mentions many of her 'cousins' and other relatives. Neither does the 'Pedigree of the Family of Chauncey,' compiled by Stephen Tucker, Esq., Somerset Herald in Ordinary, 1884, name a Mary which could possibly have been Mary, wife of Joseph Loomis. On May 3rd, 1643, he had granted him from the Plantation four acres of land, bounded north by land of Joseph Loomis, the elder. In Vol. I, of lands, in office of Sec'y of State of Connn., this entry occurs: Joseph Lumas Jr. Owner of land before 1653, at Windsor, Conn. in 1660, by purchase, he acquired land on the east side of the Conn. River. In 1686 he conveyed a part of this land to his son Joseph, and a part of his son John. He was a member of Windsor troop of horse, in King Phillip's War, 1675-6, (see soldiers in King Phillip's War, by Geo. M. Bodge, 1896), and was granted 6s 8d 'on war account.' He was a freeman in 1654, and d. June 26, 1687. 12 ch'n, all b. Windsor."

      10. The book "Dorset Pilgrims," 1989, pp. 200-1: "Among the [horse] troopers [organized in 1658] … there were only two brothers. Thomas and Nathaniel Loomis were the sons of Joseph Loomis who … came from East Anglia; he and his family of five sons probably came from the Huitt party in 1638. He was a man of substance, receiving from the plantation grants valued at ₤675 which placed him among the most wealthy which placed him among the most wealthy. His large home lot of 26 acres was prominent on the Island next to old Henry Wolcott on the Rivulet bank of Plymouth Meadow. He did not, however, play any notable role in Windsor's affairs nor indeed, with one exception, did his sons, save that three of them served as town constable. The exception was the second son, John, who was a townsman and a deputy and, with a family of thirteen children, inherited his father's homestead. His true importance was as a deacon of Windsor church, an office which he exercised with authority for many years. Neither of our troopers, Thomas and Nathaniel, achieved distinction, though they lived respectably and comfortably, Thomas with four and Nathaniel with twelve children. Nathaniel married deacon Moore's daughter. This marriage, together with that of his brother Joseph to Mary Chauncey, daughter of Warham's successor as minister, and brother John's becoming a deacon, were to bring the family well within the ambit of church dignity and influence."

      11. The book "Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Rice Lyon and his wife Harriet Wade Rice with related families," by Patty Barthell Myers (2003), pp. 448-51:
"JOSEPH LOOMIS, b. Eng., c1590; d. Windsor, Conn., 25 Nov 1658. He m. Messing, County Essex, England 30 Jun 1614 MARY WHITE. She was bpt. Shalford, England, 24 Aug 1590; d. Windsor, Conn., 23 Aug 1652, d/o Robert White and Bridget Allgar of Messing.
Joseph Loomis was a woolen draper in Braintree, Essex Co., England; sailed from London 11 Apr 1638 in the Susan and Ellen, and arrived at Boston 17 Jul 1638, living for about a year at Dorchester, Mass. It is mentioned in the town records of Windsor, Vol. 1, that on the 2d of Feb., 1640, he had granted him from the Plantation 21 acres adjoining Farmington Aver, on the west side of the Connecticut river; also several large tracts of land on the east side of the Connecticut, partly from the town and partly by purchase. He probably came to Windsor in the summer or autumn of 1639, and he is generally supposed to have come in the company with Rev. Ephraim Huet, who arrived at Windsor 17 Aug 1639. He brought with him five sons, all of whom were freemen 7 Oct 1669, and three daughters. The marriages of these children are recorded in the town records of Windsor, as were the births of their children, but as the dates of birth of Joseph's children are not recorded, it is difficult to determine the order of seniority. His house was situated near the mouth of the Farmington river on the "Island," so called because at every great freshet it became temporarily an island by the overflowing of the Connecticut river.
In the Records of particular Court for the colony of Connecticut, Vol 2, p. 115, is recorded the agreement of the children of Mr. Joseph Loomis, respecting the division of the estate of said deceased as approved by the Court 2 Dec 1658.

(Manwaring, Charles W., A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, Hartford District. Vol. 1, 1650-1663, pp. 135-6.)
It is believed that the order in which the children were named in the division of the estate indicates the relative ages of the children. Further, Joseph Loomis, the younger, and John Loomis had land granted to them from the Windsor Plantation in 1643. The other sons acquired no land until several years afterward. The marriages of the sons, as recorded at Windsor, took place in the order of the names mentioned above.

Inventory of his estate was made 12 Jul 1687 by Henry Wolcott, John Wolcott and John Loomis and amounted to £281.14.08. 12. The book "Emerson-Benson Saga …," by Edmund K. Swigart (Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc., 1994), pp. 351-53:
"JOSEPH1 LOOMIS (JOHNA LUMACE, JOHNB LUMMYS, THOMASC) was born by 1590, perhaps in Braintree, county Lincoln, England, and died 25 November 1658 at Windsor, CT. He was the son of JOHNA LUMACE, a tailor of Thaxted and Braintree and AGNESA LINGWOOD and JANE MARLAN?, daughter of WILLIAMB and MARGARETA (PERYE) MARLAN? of Braintree. He was also the grandson of JOHNB LUMMYS, a carpenter of Thaxted, and Kryster [sic: Krysten] (Christian (___). JOSEPH1 married 30 June 1616 at Messing, county Essex, England, MARY1 WHITE, daughter of ROBERTA, a wealthy yeoman, and BRIDGETA (ALLGAR) WHITE of Shalford, county Essex. MARY1 was baptized 24 August 1590 at Shalford and died 23 August 1652 at Windsor. MARY1's younger sister, ANNA1, married ancestor JOHN1 PORTER.
United States President Ulysses Simpson Grant (18th Chief Executive), Stephen Grover Cleveland (22nd and 24th), and Gerald Rudolph Ford, (38th), were descendants of MARY1's parents and Millard Fillmore (13th President), of her and her parents.
JOSEPH1 was a woolen draper, He and his wife lived in Braintree until 1628. They moved to London and from there sailed with their eight children 11 April 1638 aboard the "Susan and Ellen", the same ship that ancestor Rev. PETER1 BULKELEY had taken in 1635. The LOOMIS family arrived in Boston 11 July 1638, they may have spent their first year in Dorchester, MA, but moved by land in the summer of 1639 to Windsor, CT, "Probably in the company of Reverend Ephraim Huet who arrived there August 17, 1639" (ref. 3). "On 2 Feb. 1640 he had granted to him 21 acres on the west side of the Connecticut River adjoining the Farmington River" (ref. 6). JOSEPH1 continued to acquire land and served on juries in 1642 and in 1644 with Nathaniel1 Foote, brother of ancestor MARYA FOOTE. "On 6 January 1650, he was sued by" [ancestor WILLIAM1 BUELL] "for trespass and for damage to the extent of seven bushels of corn; one may infer that his stock got away from him" (ref. 3).
JOSEPH1 apparently left no will. His estate was valued at 178 pounds 10 shillings, with "a 'debt in England'" (ref. 3) of 12 pounds 14 shillings 6 pence against it. On December 1658, his wife having predeceased him, his five sons and three daughters (two represented by their husbands) signed an agreement in place of a will to divide JOSEPH's estate equitably among them.
The children of JOSEPH1 and MARY1 (WHITE) LOOMIS, all probably born in Braintree, county Lancaster, England, and probably not all listed in the correct order of birth, were.

Note: The lists in Appendix II should be used with considerable caution and in terms of orders of magnitude only. A few inventories include some land as well as chattels; there are one or two - Matthew Allyn is an example - the bulk of whose possessions lie outside Windsor; and allowance must be made for those, usually elderly, who have already deeded the bulk of their property to children before their death; but even in its raw state the lists reveal the concentration of possessions, if not 'wealth', in the hands of a minority of families and predictable families at that. They bear comparison with the list of grants from the plantation in Appendix I."
