- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. Last name is Predmore with variations of Pridmore, Prigshorn, or Prigmore.
The book: "A History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Embracing a Genealogical Record, Etc.," by Edwin Salter, published 1890, p. lxiv: "Winner, Winnow - John Winnow's (or Winner's) house is named in a survey 1790 between North and Middle branches Forked River on main road from Goodluck to Egg Harbor. Jonathan Winner lived at same place at a little later date. Jonathan was m. to Sarah Predmore, July 28, 1800. His dau. or sister Mary m. Samuel Worden, who d. in 1812; she d. in 1828 at 59 years. [George] King Winner of Toms River, a coasting captain, went West, probably to San Francisco, about forty years ago."
2. As to Jonathan Winner and Sarah Predmore, we find him at Forked River just above Waretown at around the War of 1812. Their marriage is documented. Sarah Predmore's name changes depending on source - but definitely a Predmore. Jonathan was also shipping partners with Sopers, whose graves I found in Waretown. The Winners do not go back in the area beyond Jonathan's father Isaac Winner. They were evidently later arrivals than Predmores.
3. We find an interesting entry in Familysearch's "Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958": David Brown and Barbary Turner or Winner, 7 Dec 1828, Brown Co., OH, per Ohio-VR; Source Film Number: 384273. Due to all pre 1855 Winners in Brown co. being related to Jonathan Winner, it would seem logical to assign Barbara as a daughter to Jonathan. This however does not prove out and is actually refuted by the 1850 census. We don't find any younger David and Barbara in a nationwide 1850 census search; however, 1850 shows a couple of exactly the same name in adjoining Clermont co. in their 70s. Barbara is from PA and not NJ and this was most likely a second marriage for David. Mary's surname of Turner or Winner is coincidental. David Brown is the father of James Brown of this database and others in the area including an Abner Brown as well as perhaps Benjamin Winner's wife Polly/Mary Brown. Ephraim Predmore, brother of Jonathan's wife Sarah Predmore, also married a wife named Mary A. Brown who could perhaps be a sister of David's. We follow David in the censuses as follows:

Benjamin Minor [Winner], males: 1<5, 1@20-30; females 2<5, 1@5-10, 1@20-30.
David Brown, males: 1<5, 1@10-15, 1@15-20, 1@20-30, 1@50-60; females: 1@20-30, 1@50-60. [Appears to be a multi-generational family.]
1840 US: Jackson Twp.: David Brown, males: 1@10-14, 1@50-59; females: 1@50-59. On same page is Ephraim Predmore who married Mary A. Brown.
1850 US: Jackson Twp., Clermont, OH, 19 Jul 1850, 96/96 ( In the same census five entries away is Abner Brown, 39, NJ, with wife Martha, 45, PA, and 8 children with the oldest being David, 20. Abner is probably a son of David.):
David Brown, 72, farmer, $1000, NJ.
Barbary, 70, PA.
4. FHL's "Marriages of Monmouth Co., 1795-1843" has the following marriages for two of Benjamin and Azuba's children:
-Ephraim Pridmore and Mary Brown, 15 Feb 1810.
-Benjamin Pridmore and Phebe Brown, 31 Jan 1814.
Ephraim follows his sister Sarah (Predmore) Winner and bro.-in-law Jonathan Winner to Ohio and then on to Pike Co., IL, with some Winner descendants.
The Browns may be siblings of David Brown, who also goes to Ohio with our Jerseyites. Children of David Brown appear to marry some of Jonathan's children.
5. Email from "Howard Johnston" December 14, 2002: "I've done quite a bit of research on the Predmore/Pridemore/Pridmore/Prigmore families... I have a John Winner, born 18 Jan 1787 in NJ, and died 18 Aug 1860, Pike Co., IL; spouse is Hester Ann Mason, born 8 Aug 1788, NJ and died 30 March 1860, Pike Co., IL. One of John Winner's 3 sons, William Winner, born abt 1814 in OH, married Rachel Predmore, died IL. Rachel Predmore's father was Ephraim Predmore, born 18 Jan 1786, Barnegat, Ocean Co., NJ; his spouse was Mary Ann Brown, born abt 16 Jan 1792, NJ, died 7 Apr 1863, OH." [KP. Ephraim is brother to John Winner's brother Jonathan's wife Sarah.]
6. Web posting of Lois Masters Jan 23, 1997: "PRIDEMORE: Seeking information on Ephraim PRIDEMORE died about 1859 in Marathon, Clermont, Ohio. Married to Mary A. Brown. Had PRIDEMORE ch: Job b 1814 died 1896 in Barnegat, NY [NJ?]; Richard b 1815 died 1869 in Clermont Co., Ohio; Benjamin b 1822, died 1859 in Clermont Co., Ohio; Samuel born 1830 in New Jersey died 25 Jun 1915 in Marathon, Ohio; married Almira Jones; Joseph b 1823 died 20 Nov 1898 in Barry, Ill; Other children of Ephraim and Mary with no other data are: Rhoda, Sarah, Fannie, Jesse, Rachel, Zuba, and an unnamed infant. Seeking birth dates and places; marriage infor and death dates and places; census extracts. Have this lineage several generations back."
7. George King Winner's (Sarah's brother-in-law) middle name of "King" may have reference to the Methodist minister in Monmouth County, New Jersey. One of the earliest Methodist preachers [before 1778] was John King [ref: the book "Old Times in Monmouth," p. 100. Also the Ocean County Historical Association library in Tom's River, NJ has the following genealogical entry: John K. Predmore [John King Predmore], b. 10-12-1842 in NJ; d. 12-12-1924, Waretown; bur. Waretown; father Wm. Predmore b. NJ; mother Mary King b. NJ; died from arterio sclerosis, was sea captain, and lived in Waretown [Waretown, NJ is where Jonathan Winner operated as a sea vessel owner/captain in 1812 and is the village home of a large number of Predmores]. Per Mike Morrissey email 29 Aug 2004: "This same William Predmore also had daughters named after his mother, Phoebe Brown and his grandmother Azuba." Azuba was Sarah Predmore's (who md. Jonathan Winner) mother.
George's brother by the same mother, Reuben Haines Winner, was evidently named for the prominent merchant Reuben Haines in Dover Township (see Reuben's notes).
8. The following are some general Predmore notes I have made. I had the opportunity to spend a day in Monmouth Co., NJ in the Toms River area down to Waretown. You are probably already aware that back in the period which concerns us, it was all Monmouth County and Ocean Co. was later made from the southern part of Monmouth. The records for that time are part of Monmouth Archives. Of the day there, I spent a part day at the County Archives, part at the Toms River Historical Society Library, and part gravesite hunting. I did not have enough time there but did find that good records are more or less non-existant in that area for that time period considering it was very rural. Predmores were concentrated in the area of Barnegat and Waretown from what I have found.

M. I copied parts of a new book called "Ocean County: four Centuries in the Making." It gives the history of Waretown. Synopsis: Started 1737 by followers of Quaker Baptists, leader Abraham Waier. They had been driven from Connecticut for disturbing the puritan Sabbath Laws. Village known also as Waeir Creek, Waeir Mil, and Weretown. Became ship building town. "Among the early families in Waretown were the Predmores, Bowkers, Rulons, Chambers, Camburns, Bunnells, Burdens, Couches, Horners, and others, all of whom formed a small compact community with the sea captains that lived in larger houses near the waterfront. Eventually became shipping point for lumber coming out of the pinelands. Blockaded in Barnegat bay by British... Union township separated from Dover township in 1845/6. Meetings held at Benjamin Predmore's house/tavern in Waretown. Town meetings also held at Predmore's tavern. John Williams Predmore was on a town meeting committee March 14, 1848. Many local families moved west to PA and OH by 1840. A Captain Predmore is on a list of several who made fortunes from the coastal trade and built large 2 story houses with double fireplaces. 1878 map of Waretown shows one of the main streets named Predmore with large tracts of land adjoining as noted belonging to Predmore. [Has different name on street now when I visited.] There is a cemetery very close to the land which I visited. A couple of the local cemeteries are: Waretown Presbyterian Cemetery and Cedar Grove,. Misc. note in book has marriage of Mary Brown to Ephraim Predmore 10 Feb 1810.
N. I have copies from the Ocean County Historical Society in Toms River of all the Predmores in the two cemeteries in Waretown and the Barnegat Masonic Cemetery in Barnegat. About 46 Predmores.
O. From the Freehold, the county seat for Monmouth (pre Ocean) County. I noted all of the land transactions and dates of Pridmores/Predmores. Dates are between 1808 to 1844. About 30 transactions with multiples for sometimes same individual. First names include Benjamin, Jeremiah, Ephraim, John Jr., John, Job, William.
