    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Later in his life, Moroni generally used either the name of Marion or M.; he perhaps had difficulty with the name Moroni which refers to the Book of Mormon prophet Moroni. He did use the name Moroni for the marriage record of his second marriage.

      2. Last mention of Moroni is June 20, 1900 US Census in Napa County. See citation below.

      3. This is probably our Moroni: Daily Alta California, San Francisco, Volume 80, Number 138, 18 May 1889, available online:
      "Accused of Stealing a Buggy.
"Marion Winner, who is charged with having stolen a horse and buggy from M. L. Isham's livery stable on Howard street, was arrested in Suisun, Solano county, last Thursday by Detective Glennon and brought back to this city last night. Winner, who claims to own a large furniture store in Suisun, denies all knowledge of the theft."

      Morgagees: Wm. Albro
      Date: 17 Jan 1888. Discharged 25 Jun 1888, Release Book 4, page 295.

      2. "Passenger List per Brooklyn from New York, Capt. A.W. Richardson, June 22, 1846," found in Hawaii by Mr. John D. Fretwell, 4012 Maywood Dr. S., Fresno, CA 93703-3330. Copy of original which was folded and contained all names on ship: "Manifest of Passengers on board Ship Brooklyn wharf A.C. Richarson is master... [contains a full listing including the following]

Preached at 11 & 3 in a large room. A goodly number of persons out to hear and good attention. At intermition Baptized Charles Wesley Wandle - & Cyrus Grey, who had fallen into transgression but now came forward, confessing and forsaking their sins. At evening met with the Brethren at the house of Brother Winner. Confirmed the two foregoing persons and called upon the Saints & others to forsake every thing sinful & renew their covenants & help with their prayers, faith, and Means, in the work of God giving the privilege to all that wished to be rebaptized. A number became candidates, Confessing their sins with a determination to reform. Monday 21st. repared to the water and re-baptized eight persons whose names were as follows: George K. Fellowship was then withdrawn from Samuel Brannan by a unanimous vote for a general course of unchristianlike conduct, neglect of duty, and for combining with lawless assemblies to commit murder and other crimes.(A reference to the Vigilance Committee of 1851, of which Brannan had been the foremost organizer and first president).)" [This information in the "Diaries" of P.P.Pratt is more detailed than the "Autobiography" book.]

      4. Censuses:
1840 US: New Jersey, Monmouth County, Dover Township, FHL film 016518: George K. Winner, Males (Ages: 1@under 5, 3@20-30, 1@30-40), Females (2@Under 5, 1@5-10, 1@10-15, 1@20-30), Four listed as Coastal Sailors. [Supposition: George was one of the "20-30" males and an "Ocean" sailor, the other three were sailing associates or relatives, the boy was Moroni [under 5], George's wife [20-30], Mary or Elizabeth [10-15; but why only 1 listed?], Louisa [5-10], Emmajean and possibly an unknown daughter [2@under 5: this is confusing - was there another unknown girl who died before the Ship Brooklyn sailing thus explaining the large gap of 6 to 7 years in childbirths?].

1850 US: No record; San Francisco's portion of US Census was lost due to earthquake or fire.

1852 US: California Statehood Census, Los Angeles County (pre-San Bernardino), p. 143; note this census began June 1852 in this county with county wide results of 7831 total residents of which 2494 were white males and 1597 were white females. It's preface to the state compilation says that only about 5 in every 6 were counted due to the frontier and mobile nature of the population. Note that the second location is last residence.
      George K. Winneo, 46, N.J., Utah, Farmer
      Hanna, 46, N.J., Utah
      Mary Ann, 23, N.J., Utah
      Emojine, 15, N.J., Utah
      Moroni, 10, N.J., Utah
      Israel, 8, N.J., Utah
      Adalade, 7, Cal., Cal.
Some of the info seems close but suspect and may have been given by a neighbor; they had not lived in Utah, the WINNEO misspelling of WINNER, and the ages vary: Adalade's age would mean she was born in 1845 before arriving in CA in 1846, Moroni's age is at variance to the 1870 census, etc.

1860 US: California, no apparent record. Did a line-by-line search of San Bernardino county without success. The following is his father's census return - due to age James is probably Moroni.
1860 US: California, Santa Cruz Co., Soquel Township, FHL 0803066, p.584, dwelling 558, family 505:
Geo. K. Winner, 53, M, Sea Captain, $1000 real estate value, $200 personal property value, birthplace of New Jersey.
James Winner, 20, M, Woodchopper, New Jersey
Israel Winner [most likely George's son Israel for whom census taker misheard 60 for 16], 60, M, Woodchopper, New Jersey.
Note that there were 166 households in Soquel; census taken 9 Jul 1860; no other individuals of New Jersey birth listed in records. As cited elsewhere, Geo. and his son Israel J. shortly hereafter enlisted in the Civil War Union forces from Santa Cruz. [See also obituary notes for Santa Cruz newspaper's comment of George in Squabble Creek area of Santa Cruz. Squabble Creek and Soquel are fairly close within 5 to 10 miles depending how one travels. The historic village of Soquel was located near the current intersection of Soquel Drive and Porter Street, just inland from Capitola.

1870 US: California, San Mateo, Woodside Post Office, FHL film 0205387, p. 387:

      1890 US: entire U.S. destroyed.

1900 US: California, Napa County, Hot Springs area, Lodi Precinct, enumeration district 87, sheet 9, line 45, enumerated June 20, 1900 [Note: living in same precinct as son Herbert Winner and his family.]: Marion Winner, b. Feb 1840 in New Jersey, widower, farmer living with English [Sproton] family [appears unrelated], unemployed 0 months of last 12, parents born NJ.

      5. Richard Hopkin's Journals [also known as San Bernardino Branch Records], (LDS Archives, Film):
      a. Journal:
      i. 8 Mar 1852: "Planted center stake of temple block."
ii. Saturday 13 Mar 1852: "Weather. Fair and cool the mountains around encased with snow. last evng there was a heavy frost. Bro. [George] Winner and famaly [sic] and Bro. Wm. Stout arrived to day from San Francisco."
      b. 1852 Tithing Journal: "Winner, Geo $86"; "Winner, M $104" [unsure who "M" is - Moroni?].
      c. Contra Books [unsure what these were except perhaps prepayment towards Colony land] which began around 20 Mar 1852: "George K. Winner March 20, 1852 by cash $200"; "Maroni Winner [Moroni] cash $5.00 March 21, 1852"[p.103]; "David Fredrick, March 22, 1852, by cash $12.50" [p.114].

      6. "Index of San Mateo County Times Gazette 1859-1899" lists: "Winner, boy, born 23 Aug 1873 to M. Winner, paper of 30 Aug 1873 [this is a typo; actual print date is 6 Sep 1873]. Actual article [San Mateo County History Library, Redwood City, CA] reads: "In Redwood City, Aug. 23d, 1873, to the wife of M. Winner, a son." This is reference to Moroni's son Herbert.

      7. California Great Register of Voters:
1879: P. 36, San Mateo County, entry #2452, reg. #1475: Winner, Marion; age 28; New Jersey; laborer; 6th township; native; registered 5 May 1869. [The 6th township was very rural and mainly redwood lumbering camps then as well as now with very few inhabitants high in the mountains on the San Mateo Peninsula.]
1886: P. 42, Napa County, entry # 4175: Winner, Marion; age 46; nativity: New Jersey; occupation: hotel keeper; place of residence: Calistoga; date of registration: 30 Sep 1886.

1898: P. 11, Hot Springs Precinct, Napa Co.; entry #5324: Winner, Marion; laborer; age 58; 5'6-1/2"; fair complexion, blue eyes, gray hair; born New Jersey; living Hot Springs; P.O. address: Calistoga, reg. Oct. 15, 1898.

      8. Woodside, where Moroni lived in 1870, was in the heart of redwood lumber and shingle camps with which he may have been familiar due to perhaps his San Bernardino days and his brother-in-law's [David Frederick] sawmill operations there. By 1870 this area was overharvested and lumbering was moving up the mountain towards LaHonda where Moroni's father, George, died in 1877. This area had been the first coastal lumbering location in the 1850's and 60's before Northern California and the Pacific Northwest took off. Even though there is nothing saying Moroni was into lumbering, that is about all that was happening in this area at this time. Even at its height between 1850 and 1870, there was never more than a few hundred men employed in the San Mateo County logging industry.

      9. Moroni worked in a hotel in Calistoga, California. According to Napa County tax records, he and his wife Nancy owned lot 7, block F in Calistoga. This lot is in the block bordered by Railroad Ave, 4th St., Washington, and County Road to Clear Lake [Lake Road]. The lot fronts on both Lake Rd. and 4th St. and was the 5th lot from Railroad Ave. or the 4th lot from Washington. Calistoga's old racetrack was just across Railroad Ave. The lot was bought Jan 17, 1888 by M. Winner from Wm. Albro per Napa County records, p.121, Liber 31. The lot shows up under the name of Mrs. M.L. [Nancy] Winner in the Napa County Tax Assessment Records as RD Dist 17, year 1889, p. 32, film #1017. Other Napa county tax assessment records found in "Napa County Tax Assessment Records Index, 1883-1893 as published by the Napa Valley Genealogical Society, 1991, include:
      a. Winner, M.; RD Dist 8, 1885, p. 34, film #1002.
      b. Winner, M.; RD Dist 17, 1886, p. 31, film #1006. Personal property: $100 furniture, $125 Liquors and Cigars; no real estate shown. He personally signs "M. Winner" on 9 Jun 1886. Tracing of his signature on file with Kerry Petersen. [Items appear perhaps in connection with his hotelkeep job.]
      c. Winner, Mrs. Nancy L.; RD Dist 17, 1886, p. 57, film #1006. Lot 7, block H, Calistoga Town Lot, worth $75-135, also notes lot 7, block P. She signs with an "X".
      d. Winner, M.; RD Dist 17, 1887, p. 23, film #1008. No property nor signature indicated.
      e. Winner, Mrs. M. L.; RD Dist 17, 1887, p. 40, film #1008. $50 furniture, $130 Property, and $700 improvements. Her signature "X".
      f. Winner, Mrs. M. L.; RD Dist 17, 1889, p. 34, film #1013.

      10. Obituary of the mother of his second wife, Nancy Horrell, in the newspaper "The Napa Register" of Oct. 3, 1890 notes that the deceased, Elizabeth Horrell, has one daughter (Mrs. Winner) residing in St. Helena surviving her. Death notice in the "Napa Daily Journal" of May 24, 1893 of his second wife, Nancy, indicates she died in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa. See Biography of Nancy for both full citations. Per Moroni's voter registration of 6 Sep 1892 at Walnut Creek as cited above, Moroni must have moved between Oct. 1890 and Sep. 1892 from St. Helena in Napa Co. to Walnut Creek in Contra Costa. By 1900 he is back in Sodi precinct near Hot Springs, Napa, CA.

      BIRTH:
      1. Date from 1900 census. Location from family group sheets of Enid Willardson; she gives no source.

Berry, V.D.M. in Napa City and witnessed by J.B. Horrell and Mrs. Elizabeth Horrell both of Napa City; parents of the groom both of New Jersey; parents of the spouse: Penn; Both parties married before.
