They were married in Innsbruck Austria, in the spring of 1948. Jean Volant was my grandfather never met him since he was divorced from Suzanne. He was a musician and travelled the French coast playing violin & clarinet in a band. l believe they divorced in 1938. He died in 1978 after being involved in a car accident and spending several years in a insanitarium. The story l heard regarding Suzanne's husband Hindzee was that he was an officer in the French army. The marriage was arranged so that Suzanne could escape from Russia." 2. Family history memories of Alice Landau also known as “Nikitina,” who was the sister of Vladimir Landau and the daughter of Anna Herzenberg. Translation is from French from two handwritten pages on one sheet of paper. Patrick Landau, Nikitina’s nephew, had asked her to write down what she recalled of the family history and descendants. The description is written after January 1970 because she writes that Constantin-Pierre died in January 1970. Editorial comments are [bracketed]. “[Page 1] My father’s side: The father of my father was called Adolphe and he was born I think at Czenstohova (Poland) in 1830; he married around 1953 [misstated for 1853] my grandmother, who was named Régine. They had 4 sons and one daughter. The eldest son (1855) was Julien (Julian) born in Czenstohova who married Fanny Schaskolski, born in Riga in 1863 [handwriting garbled, may be 1865]. They had 2 sons: The youngest one Constantin-Pierre, born in Petersburg in 1893, married in 1912 with Miss Banzer had a son Youri (George) born in 1914 who is married and lives in Toulouse [France]. He had 2 sons. Constantin-Pierre remarried to Miss Tronsevitch and again another time [his third]. He died in Belgium in January 1970. The first son of Julien, Theodor was born in 1890. He married a woman from Vienna in 1943 and had a daughter. Theodor died in 1965. The second son of Adolph, Gustave was born in Czenstohova and went to the USA before the war in 1914. He had 7 sons and one daughter. I know 3 sons: Adam was born in Warsaw in 1892, Rom[?] born in Warsaw in 1894 and Walter born in New York in 1906. I don’t know the others. The third son, my father Maximilian was born April 1st 1870 in Czenstohova and died in Odessa in 1919 (added in between lines). He married Anne Herzenberg in 1899, born in 1978 [miswritten, 1878] in Moscow and had a daughter Alice-Régine [Nikitina] born in 1900 February 21st and Vladimir born in 1902 March 29 both in St. Petersburg. Vladimir, your father, married in 1945 with Miss Janine Regnard born in 1916 in Paris and you were born at Boulogne s/Seine [Boulogne-sur-Seine] September 5, 1945. The 4th son of Adolph – Stanislas was born in 1876 at Lodz. He was married to Miss Lidia ? and had 3 sons: John born in 1905, Bronislav born in 1907 and Anton born in 1914. Stanislas and Lidia were killed in Poland. Their sons were living in France. The daughter of Adolph: Evelyn was born in 1878 at Lodz (Poland) and married a Russian general Avinovitzki in 1903. Both are dead, I don’t know where or when. The only living parent [relative] that I know of is Nicolas Landau, antiquary in Paris who is the son of my father’s cousin. He is 80 years old and I think he can give more information on the Landau family! My mother’s side: The father of my mother was named Edouard Herzenberg. He was born around 1845 and died in 1910 in Moscow. He was married, but I think the name of my grandmother was Herzenberg too. She died in 1904 in Moscow. They had 7 daughters and 2 sons: 1) Sophie, the eldest born in 1863, married had 2 daughters Marie and Nadia. Nadia is dead and Marie lives in Moscow. She is married and has a married daughter, who has a daughter. [Page 2] 2nd daughter Elizabeth born in 1865 in Moscow, married Adolph Werblovsky and had a daughter Catherine who married in 1913 Victor Buzkoy who died in England in 1945. Their son Arik was born in St. Petersburg in 1914, he is married to Julie and has a son and a daughter and lives in Malta. Catherine lives in Nice. Elisabeth died in Nice in 1950 and Adolph in 1938. 3rd daughter Hélène born in 1867 Moscow, married Ossip Offenbacher and had a son Lothar born in 1896. Hélène died in 1919 in Berlin and Ossip later. Lothar disappeared in Germany. 4th daughter Egenie [Eugenia] married Leon Taube from Riga and was born in 1876 in Moscow and died in 1930 in Moscow. No children. 5th daughter Lilia: born in 1877, died in 1897 in Davos. 6th daughter Anne: my mother born in 1878 married Maximillian Landau in 1898 and had 2 children Alice born on Feb. 21, 1900, and Vladimir March 29, 1902. Maximillian Landau died in Odessa in 1919 (January) and Anne died in 1961 in Monte-Carlo. 7th daughter Antoinette: born in 1885 and died in 1905. 1st son Ivan: born in 1870 married Lidia (French) in 1898 and had 3 children: Michel born in 1900, André born in 1901 and Susan born in 1903. Michel died in 1935, André lives in Moscow. Susan lives in Menton. Ivan died in Siberia in 1930 and Lidia too. André had a son and Susan married a Volant, a daughter Lidia married in Canada to an Austrian man. She has a son and daughter. 2nd son Paul: born in 1872 married to Natalie, one daughter. This email was in response to some indexed records I found and attached on Family Search: "See below Milan’s translation and comments. I am happy to confirm that Hans, who died in 1649, is the father of Christian, Heinrich, Verona, and Anna. Also that Anna was the name of his wife. It does not give us a clue as to where they came from, as ‘Kirchen’ is not evident in the record according to Milan." He had his daughter visiting from Germany and then had several unexpected issues come up that he had to take care of. So, here is his answer. I hope this helps. - Diane From Milan: In the two marriage records (see links sent by Noel) I can't see anywhere the word "Kirchen". I see Gennenbach and Feldberg, but no Kirchen. When I compare the information gained from the marriage records, then Heinrich Stocker is very likely a younger brother of Christian (abt.1605-1669) and a son of Hans (abt.1580-1649). In this case, Heinrich's and Christian's mother would be Anna, a name not recorded yet in the PAF-version I have from an older project. The marriage record of Heinrich (from 1656) lists Hans Stocker as deceased. According to prior research he did die in 1649. The other marriage entry would then be for Anna, the widow of Hans, who remarried in 1651 (with Uhlin Müller). Also the towns Gennenbach and Feldberg fit perfectly into the picture. And the link to the christening is definitely a son of Heinrich Stocker. Two of the three documents mentioned here, with the exception of the 2nd marriage of Anna, were already found during the March 2018 project. The data was entered by me into a separate PAF-file. I assume that in the meantime they found it's way into FamilySearch. It would be easy to connect those families. Since Noel asked for a translation of the marriage record, here it is: On the Sexagesina Sunday (which was on the 10 Feb., in 1656) were married Heinrich Stocker of Gennenbach, legitimate son of the deceased Hans Stocker, the late citizen and carpenter of the same town, married with Ursula, legitimate daughter of the deceased Hans Müller, the late citizen and finish carpenter of Veldtberg (=Feldberg). Because of poverty, the couple was married in their home without an appropriate ceremony and without an invitation for any wedding guests." Milan" | Anna (I5308)

Email dated 4 May 2015 from Rose Green rose.green@att.net: "Elisabeth Meyer (who married Gross) has a listed birth place of Wiesen, Bavaria, with no source listed, in Family Tree. The Altrip Familienbuecher book says she was born in Reisen (part of the parish of Birkenau, Hessen, which is quite a bit nearer to Altrip than Wiesen). Familienbuecher are generally pretty accurate, as they are based directly on church records. However, when dealing with people from other areas like this, the accuracy is not quite as reliable. I would like to check out the records for Reisen and see just where this girl came from. I made a note on her file but did not change anything. I see that Familysearch has her father named Hans Heinrich Meyer. The Altrip book says that her father was Hans Meyer of Reisen. (Probably as recorded in the marriage record, which was in Altrip.) So ... that should be investigated to make sure we have the right guy. Reisen and Wiesen are definitely not the same place." 2. Emails from Rose Green, descendant and expert German researcher (rose.green@att.net): 29 Apr 2015: "Given that we've been talking about Birkenau and all [in regards to Johan Michael Roemer], I went back to look at exactly who it is of Conrad Dick's ancestors who lived in that parish. A while back, I found a discussion on a site about Brethren genealogy [see separate note in file of Johann Conrad Dick from Dwayne Wrightsman dated 30 Aug 2009], in which he was identified as a member of that group, and traced to Heddesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. His mother was from nearby Altrip and his father from Heddesheim. I discovered that there were printed Familienbuecher (genealogy books where someone has extracted the whole of a town's church records and organized them into neat family groups) for both villages. I ordered them via interlibrary loan, and yes, the whole family showed up. Conrad's mother was from Weschnitz (not in the Pfalz but over near Birkenau), and his grandparents were married in Furth (the Catholic parish that covered Birkenau at the time). (The grandparents were the ones moving up after the 30 Years' War from parts south.) The Altrip records list a marriage for Johann Conrad Dick on 22 Feb 1746 to Anna Catharina, widow of Hans Jacob Baargeld (marriage 15 Nov 1735, which gives her maiden name as Gross, daughter of Hans Peter Gross and Anna Meyer). Altrip and Heddesheim are very near Mannheim (he named his farm Mon Hime in America). The new location, Berghuelen, Blaubeuren, Wuerttemberg, is quite a bit further away. The Altrip records also apparently include the birth record of Maria Elisabeth Dick, who would be the wife of Peter Eller, if this group is ours, on 14 Dec 1746. This was in the Reformed church. The Gross family goes back several generations (some of the children don't show up in Familysearch; it's more of a direct line thing). ...To me, the Altrip/Heddesheim connection seems to carry more weight than the Berghuelen one (if nothing else because of the Mannheim connection--but also because all of the people seem to show up there)." 2 May 2015: "Yes, I suspect that with the conversion to newer versions of Familysearch, some records have become garbled or incorrectly merged. You are right--all the background details list the name in FS as Anna Maria. And suddenly, she's bam! Ruth, out of nowhere. The Altrip Familenbuch does not list anyone in the Gross family named Ruth. It's not a name that commonly appears in German church records of the time. The siblings of Anna Catharina Gross that are recorded in the Altrip book all have specific death dates in Germany listed. Possibly there were more siblings who died young and would be in the original church records, but I'm not seeing anyone who could be remotely construed as Ruth. Hannah sounds more English than German to me (Anna in German--unless maybe a nickname for Johanna?), but her husband--he's definitely got a German name, and he's living with all those Germans. The Heddesheim Familienbuch does list a sister to Conrad, Anna Maria, b. 1726. I don't see a Hannah Sophia, but it would be worth checking the actual primary church records in Altrip. Such published books have errors, as we know. I think it's worth putting her down as a hypothesis to be tested. Regarding Margaret Susan Dick who married Koons, I can't tell from the information given if Dick was her maiden name, or if it was the name of her first husband who died while coming to America. Again, I don't see anyone by that name in the Familienbuch, but Conrad has some brothers who don't have death entries listed. There are certainly other Dick families in the US that don't have any apparent relation to us (Adam Dick--unless way back we have a DNA connection??). But since they all(Koons, etc.) seem to follow each other around, she's probably another one to look into. In any case, there is a concrete marriage record for a Johann Conrad Dick marrying Anna Catharina Gross on 22 Feb 1746 in Altrip, Pfalz, Germany. The birth of a daughter, Maria Elisabetha Dick, who we suppose to be the one who married Peter Eller, was born in Altrip on 14 Dec 1746. I suspect that a lot of incorrect merging (and some assumptions based on extracted records taken out of context) have happened in recent years. I have certainly seen several instances of people in Family Tree suddenly being connected to people they have no relation to, just because of a name similarity (and the new situation replacing the previous relationship that was based on detailed research and tangible data). Sometimes it seems like we've gone from the problem of temple work being done over and over for the same individual to some rather overzealous merging. I'm sure we'll get it all straightened out in the end, but it makes for confusion right now. In any case, here's a summary of what the Familienbuch Heddesheim has to say about Conrad Dick: Johann Velten (Valentin) Dick (son of Hans Velten Dick, +7 Mar 1735 Heddesheim) oo Anna Margaretha Hinderkircher (b. in the 1690s in Weschnitz, which is near Birkenau, +7 Mar 1742 Heddesheim) on 16 Feb 1718 in Heddesheim. She was the daughter of Johann Joachim Hinderkircher, married in Furth (again, near Birkenau) but from "Tirol," and Susanna Baltzer of Schwaben. Children (born in Heddesheim): 1. Johann Conrad, *3 Feb 1721 2. Justina Magdalena *5 May 1724, +19 Dec 1762 in Heddesheim 3. Johann Christoph, *28 Jul 1725 4. Anna Maria, *28 Dec 1726 5. Tobias, *8 Feb 1729 6. Johann Michael, *22 Mar 1731 Extra children not listed could of course be fit in here, and a search should be done of the church books. After Velten died, Anna Margaretha married a widower in the area, but I don't have a record of any children (not to say there weren't any). On the Gross side (from the Altrip Familienbuch), I've got Hans Peter Gross of Altrip, no birth info given, but believed to be the son of Johann Ludwig Gross and Catharina of Altrip (md. bef 1692) m. Elisabeth Meyer of Reisen (Birkenau parish again! Her father was Hans Meyer) on 24 Nov 1716 in Altrip. Children born in Altrip: 1. Anna Catharina, 22 Aug 1717 2. Johann Heinrich, *16 Feb 1721, +11 Jun 1722 3. Maria Barbara, *15 Oct 1724, +15 Jun 1762 Altrip. Married Johann Georg Schwitzgöbel of Weisenheim, Sand, Germany 14 Sep 1745 in Altrip Then Hans Peter Gross married again, this time on 9 May 1730 (Altrip) to Anna Clara Schneider, *25 Sep 1711 Altrip. They had one child that I know of in Altrip: 4. Johann Ludwig Gross, *5 Oct 1732, +25 Apr 1735 Anyway, I think that it might be a very good idea to poke into this some more ... The following is a shortened excerpt from the first chapter; however, see the notes of the earliest Austen in my database for the full transcription: "Jane Austen came of a goodly heritage. By birth, and with the added gift of genius tempered with amused ironic detachment, she was the ideal delineator of her particular class - the English country gentry of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. On her father's side she was descended from six well-documented generations of respectable Kentish land owners who had gradually achieved eminence in their corner of England by way of the broadcloth trade.[1] That, and iron working, had been the leading industries of the Weald of Kent for many generations. The Leighs of Cheshire, her mother's family, were much more aristocratic. Not only was their social position higher than the Kentish Austens', but their distinguished pedigree, extending back into the mists of the Middle Ages, had ramifications that connected them with some of the most memorable names in English history.[2] Many years after Jane Austen's death, in an undated letter to his nephew, the Reverend James Edward Austen-Leigh, her brother, Henry evaluated his paternal ancestry thus: '...it is no scandal to say that my aforesaid relations of West Kent never raised any alarming fears of their setting even the Medway on fire.'[3] Significantly, he did not feel it necessary to draw a contrast between his Austen and Leigh backgrounds. The Weald of Kent, the home of Jane Austen's paternal forebears, derives its name from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning forest.[4] It is now used to denote that part of England lying between the North and South Downs, including a fair-sized part of West Kent, a greater part of Sussex, and fragments of Surrey and Hampshire.[5] For centuries before the Roman occupation of Britain it was an almost impenetrable woodland, traversed only by ancient trails, inhabited by robbers, wolves, wild boar and deer, and regularly visited in season by swineherds to fatten their flocks. The region remained remote even after the Romans brought their legions and made roads. But by the sixteenth century, when Jane Austen's ancestors rose to prominence there, much of the timber had been felled, and the area was dotted with clearings, where farming, cloth-weaving, and iron-smelting activities clustered around the square-towered medieval churches that still grace the Wealden countryside. The surname Austen, variously spelled Austen, Austin, Astyn, and Awsten, before standardization settled on the first two, is still fairly common in the Weald.[6] The 1978 Tunbridge Wells telephone directory, covering a radius of a little less than fifty miles including much of the Kentish Weald, listed fifty Austen families and seventy-one Austins. Both surnames are diminutives of Augustine, the Old French version of the Latin Augustinus, the usual Middle English form of a saint's name.[7] The saint in this particular instance was St Augustine (d. AD 604), the 'Apostle of the English' and first Archbishop of Canterbury, whose name often was shortened to St Austin. Jane Austen's confirmed paternal ancestry begins during the reign of Elizabeth I .with her fourth great-grandfather, John Austen I of Horsmonden, Kent, who was born around 1560 and died in March 1620. Reputable genealogists, including Sir Anthony Wagner, Clarenceux King of Arms, have speculated that John Austen I of Horsmonden was a great-grandson of a William Astyn, who lived at Yalding, a Wealden town a few miles to the north of Horsmonden. His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1522, during the reign of Henry VIII. However no conclusive proof for this assumption has so far been established.[8] John Austen I married Joan, a daughter of Jeffrey Berry of Midley, Kent, in September 1584. After bearing him eight sons and one daughter, she died in December 1604, in giving birth to twin sons, Thomas and Richard, who survived. She is buried beneath the nave of the sandstone church dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch in Pisidia, that stands in lonely Gothic dignity some two miles from the present village of Horsmonden. Her gravestone bears a brass representing a Jacobean lady, her hands clasped in prayer, wearing a great beaver hat and a high, pleated ruff. Above her effigy is a small brass plate with a Latin sentence that roughly translated says: 'O friend, if you seek the grave of the one who prepared it, it was John my husband by the name of Austen.' Beneath her effigy is a larger brass plate recording, among other things, that Joan Austen 'DIED IN CHILDBED OFTEN VTTERING THESE / SPEACHES LET NETHER HVSBAND NOR CHILDREN NOR / LANDS NOR GOODS SEPERATE ME FROM THE MY GOD.[9] It is not as dramatic as Jane Austen's last words, 'I want nothing but death', but its sincerity and directness expresses the deep-rooted, unpretentious piety that characterized Joan Austen's famous descendant. · John Austen I outlived his wife by' sixteen years, and is buried beside her. His will shows he was a man of means, owning property in both Kent and Sussex. He was succeeded by his eldest son, John Austen II (1585-1650), who, dying without issue, was succeeded by his eldest surviving brother, Francis (1600-88), Jane Austen's third great-grandfather. John Austen I had been content to fill the role of a prosperous farmer, but by the time his surviving sons reached maturity they began to designate themselves as 'clothiers', that is, the fabricators of woollen cloth. Kent had been famous for its broadcloth since the fourteenth century, at which time Edward III invited Flemish weavers to come 'into our kingdom of England for the purpose of working wools there and otherwise exercising their mystery'.[10] Many of these Flemish weavers settled in the Weald of Kent, where water for finishing the heavy cloth was plentiful. By the fifteenth century the occupation of clothier had become so profitable that the fortunes of many former agricultural families like the Austens had been made in wool. The clothier provided the capital and the wool for the over-all operation, and the broadcloth, woven on looms by skilled weavers in cottages surrounding the clothier's more pretentious dwelling, was then processed in workrooms attached to his house. After that it was sold to London factors, who distributed it throughout England and on the Continent. For centuries Kentish broadcloth enjoyed an enviable reputation, but by the early eighteenth century, when Jane Austen's ancestors had turned to other occupations, its production was practically extinct in the Weald, the manufacture of finer types of cloth having shifted to other parts of England, particularly the Cotswolds. Even so, the industry had built up fortunes and a sturdy independence in many Wealden farming and sheep breeding families. Daniel Defoe has this to say concerning the social class from which Jane Austen's paternal ancestors were descended: "These clothiers and farmers, and the remains of them, upon the general elections of members of parliament for the country, show themselves still there, being ordinarily 14 or 1500 freeholders brought from this side of the county; and who for the plainness of their appearance, are called the gray coats of Kent; but are so considerable, that whoever they vote for is always sure to carry it, and therefore the gentlemen are very careful to preserve their interest among them."[11] In this connection it is interesting ro note that in a book formerly owned by Jane Austen and now belonging to the Jane Austen Memorial Trust,[12] in commenting on a woollen works at Wootton-under-Edge 'belonging to Messrs. Austin' someone has written 'A branch of the Austens - the "Gray Coats of Kent" ', showing that the Hampshire Austens were well aware of their Wealden clothier background.[13] To return to the Austen chronicle: it was Francis, the younger son of John Austen I, who acquired the two many-gabled, half timbered Tudor manor houses (still extant) of Grovehurst and Broadford near Horsmonden in 1647, that were subsequently occupied by many generations of his family. At his death in 1688 Francis left a handsome inheritance to his only son, John Austen III, Jane Austen's great-great-grandfather, who was born around 1629 and married Jane Atkins of Brightling, Sussex. By her he had two sons, John Austen IV and Francis who died young, and three daughters, Jane, Ellen, and Anne. Only John Austen IV and his sister Jane had any direct connection with Jane Austen's family. In the case of the earlier Jane Austen, the benefits were unforeseen, but long-lasting... Notes: 1. Alida descends through Hans Jacob Frederick and Margaret Young and their son George: "Hannah, b. 1784. md. Christian Plank, 1 Jan 1801. Children: Jacob, b. 19 Jan 1803." BIRTH: 1. The birthdate is uncertain. I have used "abt 1779," and Alida Reed uses 1784. Both dates appear speculative; however, 1784 seems to be too tightly wedged in between the two adjoining Children. 2. The actual birth place is unknown. Both Jacob Frederick and Margaret Young were of Warrensbush (now Florida Township) in Montgomery Co. They both did eventually end up in Johnstown, which is about 10 miles max from Mill Point and north across the Mohawk River. When they moved is not known except that they did buy land there at Keck Center in 1792. They may have been paying quit-rent on the property before then since it was about the early 1790 when many of the landowners were finally selling the quit-rented land. Alida Reed in her booklet already referenced elsewhere in these note indicates she believes they moved there shortly after the birth of their first child Peter. She is confident that it may have been no later than when Margaret was born in 1785 because the sponsors at Margaret's birth were Jacob Bossert and his wife Margaret. She says, "In the genealogy of the Bossart family (sometimes spelled Boshart and Bushart) we find the first of that family did live in the section of Johnstown that leads to Fonda.
