    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. 1664 Hearth Tax: Robert Dansey 2 chimneys, Deane Borough in West Milton. In the index, it is noted as part of the ecclesiastic parish of Hartlip prior to 1832.
      1664 - owned a house in Hartlip
1665 - dau. Elizabeth christened in Stockbury, which still fits house in Hartlip.
1667 - dau Anne christened in Hollingbourne.
1690s - Robert & Anne buried in Hollingbourne.
Note: No Dancy (or variants thereof) entries found in Hartlip Kent per Kent Family History Society CD of parish transcriptions (available in FHL, CD #3223).

      2. Using maps.familysearch.org, I did a three mile radius search of parishes centered on a point equidistant from Hartlip, Thurnham, and Hollingbourne, which basically put us into Stockbury. The list of these parishes included Thurnham, Detling (starts after 1700), Bredhurst, Rainham, Hartlip, Borden, Bredgar, Bicknor, Hollingbourne, Boxley (starts after 1692), and Huckinge. I used the Kent Family History Society CD of parish transcriptions (available in FHL, CD #3223); note: I would rate this source at about 98% accurate but it is fast. I looked at any name remotely close to Dancy and then verified the same by looking at the actual records on film. With the exception of the entries we already have on Robert Dancy, there were no other entries to be found except for the following who could be a possible relation subject to more research:
-Hollingbourne: 26 May 1647 - Izaac, s of Thomas and Mary Danse, bap.
-Thurnham: 11 Feb 1628, Francis Dance and Avis Ower, widow, mar. (Note: This page is very faded and poorly transcribed. It should be 11 Jun 1627 - Thomas Dance and Avis Owre; Dance may be Bance, but it is a very faded document. The BT is missing this page and the AT shows it as tentatively as Bance, but the writing is in a different hand and there are no Bances in this parish [nor Dances either].)

      3. History of the surname Dancy from the website http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Dancy accessed 29 Jan 2016:
"Amongst the original followers of William the Conqueror at the 1066 invasion of England was William de Anesi, from the village of that name in Calvados, Normandy. He was later granted extensive land holdings in Hampshire and Wiltshire, and his name is perpetuated in the village of Winterbourne Dauntsey. The 1242 Fees Rolls of Wiltshire records that the village was held by Roger Dauntsey. Even by this date the name had developed several spellings, such as Dantesia, De Dantesie, De Andisie and De Anesy, the first "modern" form probably being that of Roger Danesi, in the Kent Rolls of 1210. Other recordings include: Peter de Dauntesy, of Berkshire in 1273, and Richard de Dauntesye in Wiltshire in the same period. Later recordings show the modern forms: Johane Dauncy being registered at St. Antholin's Church, London, in 1539, and in 1542 "Mistress" Dancy, the wife of Alderman Dancy, was buried in London. Amongst the earliest settlers to America was John Dancy, recorded in the Virginia Muster of 1621, in the company of George Sandis Esq. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William de Anesi, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Wiltshire, during the reign of King William 1, known as "The Conqueror", 1066 - 1087. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling."

      4. Family Search has a bad extracted record which is not found in Thornham (Thurnham) in the Bishop's Transcript film they reference -- I checked it as well as the Parish record and the Archdeacon's Transcript. It did seem a bit incredible to be getting married the same day as your baby is being blessed. The erroneous extracted record:
      Gender: Male
      Christening Date: 06 Nov 1662
      Christening Place: Thornham, Kent, England
Citation: "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N1ZX-97M : accessed 29 January 2016), Robert Dansy, 06 Nov 1662; citing Kent, England, reference Item 4; FHL microfilm 1,737,095.

      5. As to other general research into the origins of "Dancy" in Kent.
      A. Two old Kent wills spelled "Daunce":
      -Daunce, Henry (Dawnce), Chelsfield, 1468pd
      -Daunce, John, Hadlow,1447d
      B. Robert could be an immigrant and possibly from London. This was common at the time. London's poor were attracted by the wages, which were in highest in England during the 1680's (page 257 of THE ECONOMY OF KENT 1640-1914) and, since the Tudor era, there had been an annual influx of pickers from London and Essex (p. 147, CRISES AND ORDER IN ENGLISH TOWNS 1500-1700). In LONDON (Vintage edition of 2001, p. 728) Peter Ackroyd described wealthier London residents moving to Kent: "the air being exceedingly wholesome, many citizens have built houses; and such whose circumstances do not permit of that expense, take ready furnished lodgings for the summer."
      C. Dancy is so unusual of a name and I cannot find many of them in Kent. Given the possible immigration from London, we find the following in St. Andrew, Enfield, London, England:
      - 29 Nov 1641 - Robert s/o Richard & Anne Daunce (If this is our Robert, he would have been about 22 when he married Ann Spice.)
      Filling in the family:
      - Richard Daunce married Ann Barnes at St Andrew, Enfield, London, 10 June 1627
      - 17 Feb 1627 - Richard
      - 6 Jan 1629 - Jacob
      - 20 March 1632 - Christian
      - 19 May 1635 - Ann
      - 31 March 1637 - Willia
In checking the 1664 hearth tax in Kent for "Daunce" entries, nothing was found. For London in 1666, the following was found with the first one possibly being the Richard above: but I think this is the Richard (possible father of our Robert) above. He was probably about 64 years old +/- 5 years. 4 hearths

      D. Using http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/kent_records/KRNS2-1.pdf accessed 10 Feb 2015 which gives Kent real estate deals, there are 11 transactions of a London mercer named William Dauncy who may have died in London 27 April 1543. These transactions certainly place this William with lands in the proximity of our Robert Dancy; however, he is probably two or three generations from our Robert. E. Elizabeth More was the daughter of Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) and Jane Colte (1488-1511). Thomas More was famous for his association with King Henry the 8th and was made a Saint by the Catholic Church. Elizabeth married William Dauncey (Dauntesey/Daunce/Dauncer) (c.1505-May 28, 1548) and had seven children: John (b.1525), Thomas, Bartholomew, William, Germain, Alice, and Elizabeth. They lived at Canons Park, Middlesex and in London, then (1543+) at Cassiobury, Hertfordshire. The name is of interest, but there is no information proving a direct link to our Robert Dancy. There is a newer book which could be of interest: "The Family and Descendants of St. Thomas More," by Martin Wood, 2008. I cannot find an e-version of the book as of 2016.

      6. Construction of the Spice Family using Probate and Church Records:
      A. Extraction of the Spice family in Thurnham (aka Thornham) Church records, which begin in 1562 to my cut-off of 1700 except for burials which I cut off at 1715; Parish Records (FHL film 1473738, it. 2), Bishop's Transcript (FHL film 1737095, it. 4), and Archdeacon's Transcript (FHL film 1752238, it. 4). The Parish records cover the 1641-1661 gap in the other two records not sent in during the Civil War. The Archdeacon's Transcript starts in 1562 and is missing the following years: 1565-6, 1568-9, 1594-5, 1606-7, 1629-30, 1641-1660. The Bishop's Transcript starts 1611 and is missing 1613-14, 1621-2, 1626-8, 1640-61. The Parish record begins 1631 but has some large almost illegible sections which hinders extracting the Civil War gap. The transcription:

[This calculates to a birth of abt 1585. There is one Spice christening in the Bearsted Kent Family Society CD transcriptions (only baptisms starting in 1563 on the CD): 6 Oct 1583 -- Willm s of John Spyce. This places him then as a son in this family. Mentioned in grandparents William and Izard Spices' 1592 and 1607 wills.]

No one listed with the following surnames (or variations thereof): Acock/Alcock, Barret, Chepfield, Dancy, Dennet, Gateland, Hadwin, Hales, Herbert, Hopper, James, Kitney, Marden, Mills, Morskin, Shelly, Sisley, Straine, Upton, and Vande Wall.

      8. The following extraction was made from the "Index to the Kent Lay Subsidy Roll of 1334/5," by H.A. Hanley, B.A. and C.W. Chalklin, M.A., B. Litt <http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Pub/KRV/18/7/313.htm> accessed 11 Feb 2016. From this index, the actual entries are found in "The Kent Lay Subsidy Roll of 1334/5," by the same authors <http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Pub/KRV/18/3/058-172.htm> accessed 12 Feb 2016. The second document more fully explains the history of this Lay Subsity. This was a tax assessed on householders; however, it probably only represents about 50% of the householders since the poorer families were not assessed:
No mentions were found for family surnames Acock/Alcock, Barret, Chepfield, Dancy, Dennett, Eagles, Gateland, Hadwin, Hales, Mills, Morskin, Shelley, Sisley, Strain, Vande Wall, Worme.
