    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Website http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/ashe/deeds/deedsabs.txt accessed 22 Dec 2008: "Ashe County, NC - Deeds - Abstracts of selected deeds" has both Michael Stoker and Luke White as witnesses placing Luke White in Ashe County in 1805: "Younce, John TO: Black, Frederick 155 a. Signed: 1805-01-01 Situate South Fork New River/Beg. at Branch on S. Fork. Book: B, 255 Witness: Michael Storker, Luke White."

      2. LDS Nauvoo records show a baptism for the dead done in 1841 for Luke White by Mary/Polly Stoker Graybill. His wife Elizabeth Dick Eller White had the same ordinance done by Polly's mother Catherine Eller Stoker. These baptisms were probably done in the Mississippi River prior to the policy change that such ordinances could only be done in the soon to be dedicated Nauvoo temple. Additionally these early baptisms were indiscriminately done by anyone of any gender rather than same gender as currently done. The individuals had to be deceased to have this LDS ordinance done in their behalf, which confirms a death date prior to 1841.

      3. Website http://www.newrivernotes.com/nc/as1807co.htm accessed 21 Dec 2008: "Minutes of the Ashe County, North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1807":
      A. "Ordered by the court that Luke White have leave to build on his own lands at the mouth of Phennix Creek."
      B. "Jabez Perkins vs Elisha Blevins Appeal. Jury sworn as follows:
      Wm. Tolliver
      Petter Graybell
      Jno. Michel
      Joshua Cox
      Jas. Hall

      David [illegible]"
      C. "Luke White being sworn sayeth that he owes Helm and firm nothing."

      4. Website "http://www.newrivernotes.com/nc/as1810co.htm accessed 21 Dec 2008: "Ashe County, North Carolina Court Orders - 1810 February Term 1810":
"A deed from John O'Johnson to Luke White for 200 acres proven in court by the oath of Chris. Shearer."

      5. Censuses:
1800 US: Morgan District, Ashe County, North Carolina (doesn't appear that Elizabeth is in this census meaning a marriage after 1800):
      White, Luke: males 0-10:2; 10-16:2; 16-26:1; 45+:1; females: 10-16:1; 16-26:2; no slaves.

1810 US: Ashe County, North Carolina, page 10 line 18. Elizabeth is probably the female who is over age 45:
      White L.: males: 10-16:1; 16-26:1 45+:1; females: 45+:1; no slaves.

1815: Website http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/ashe/vitals/1815tax.txt accessed 22 Dec 2008: ASHE CO. NC 1815 TAX LIST (The oldest surviving Ashe Co. tax list. The original is in the NC Archives in Raleigh.). The following is all of the Whites listed including Luke White:
      White, Luke 18
      White, Robert 14

1820 US: Ashe County, North Carolina. Family appears to be too young to be our Luke White - perhaps a son. [Next door is a Robert White (age 26-45) with a family].:
      White, Luke: males 0-9:1; 18-26:1; females: 0-9:1; 16-26:1.

      6. Website http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/ashe/deeds/deedsabs.txt accessed 14 Dec 2008:
"Ashe County, NC - Deeds - Abstracts of selected deeds." This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Kyle R. Graybeal krgrebiel@verizon.net, 37 Spring Lake Drive, Stafford, VA 22554. Revised 9 October 2001. This file contains abstracts of selected deeds from Ashe County, North Carolina Land records, mostly involving Graybeal family members. The information contained herein does not constitute the sum total of deeds in the Ashe County records involving Graybeal individuals. There are a few incomplete fields in some records especially in acreage, land description & witness names. This means that I have not copied them, not that the information is missing from the court records. The file now includes more deeds and has been corrected for errors dealing with land grants appearing in the original file. In the original file, the entry date and the date the deed was signed were reversed. This new file corrects that problem.
Information sorted in date order, which is yyyy-mm-dd. Grantee & Grantor names are [last], [first]. Witness names are [first], [last]. NFNR = North Fork of New River. Mn and Vn means Deed Books M new and V new respectively. Information in [] inserted by me and correct to the best of my knowledge. Information in () added for clarification. Price paid, proven date, and registered date not included to save space. I have this information on most deeds in case it is desired. Some compass directions are indicated by N, S, etc., rather spelled out. Deeds for state grants did not require witnesses' signatures. The indication that a particular person signed with an "x" is not consistent from record to record in this transcription. {Kerry's note: I have refined the list so as to cut it off after whom I think may be the first generation after John Peter Graybill and Christina Wampler; see that more complete list with John Peter Graybill - this partial list are for those only including the name of White}:
May, Abraham TO: Graybeal, Peter [Sr] 170 a.; Signed: 1799-04-07; Both sides New River @ White's line/P. Henson Corner/NFNR; Book: D, 109; Witness: S. Hubbard, Henry Graybeal.
Younce, John TO: Black, Frederick 155 a.; Signed: 1805-01-01; Situate South Fork New River/Beg. at Branch on S. Fork. Book: B, 255; Witness: Michael Storker, Luke White
Graybeal, Peter TO: Bowers, Peter 170 a.; Signed: 1810-07-03; Both sides of NFNR/the River Bank @ White's line/James Henson. Book: Mn, 161; Witness: Henry Graybeal, James Fletcher.

      BIRTH:
      1. Was 45+ in the 1800 census making birth prior to 1755.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Several family researchers indicate Luke White is probably the father of Catherine, but it is not proven. Please note that Catherine does in fact name one of her sons Luke, which may be more than coincidence. If this is true and judging from Catherine's age, Luke would have had to be married before he married Peter Eller's widow, Elizabeth Dick, after Peter's death in 1799. Some speculate that this first marriage may have been to Elizabeth Yokely, but I have not seen any documentation for this yet.
