Henrietta Keyes was born December 25, 1821 [1820?], in Waverly, Pike, Ohio, to Samuel Keyes and Nancy Delgarn Keyes. She married Alonzo Wells Whitney in 1839 at the age of 18. Alonzo was of the Methodist religion, and Henrietta, a Presbyterian, when they were married. Soon after theIr marriage an uncle of Alonzo's, who was a Mormon, converted them to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their family happiness was short-lived, because Alonzo died in Nauvoo on Feb. 12, 1845. Henrietta received her endowments in the Nauvoo Temple, Jan 26, 1846, and was sealed to Alonzo for eternity. She also married to Newell K. Whitney for time only, on that same day. Her son Don Carlos passed away at Winter Quarters. Henrietta and her son, Samuel, came across the Plains in the A.O. Smoot Company, and arrived in the Valley on Sep. 19, 1847. Her husband, Bishop Whitney, came to Salt Lake the next year, where he died in Oct. 28, 1850. She married Stephen Hales, Dec. 23, 1851, in the Endowment House. Four children were born to them. Henrietta moved to Enterprise, Utah, for some time, then to Kaysville, Utah, where she lived the rest of her life. Henrietta's birthday was always celebrated with a delicious pigeon pie. She passed away Feb. 23, 1901, in Kaysville, Utah, at age 80 years."
BIRTH:
1. Date and place per website for Utah State Historical Society Cemeteries Database; 8 Jan 2002; gives year as 1822 whereas the DUP biography cited above gives 1820. The 1820 date makes sense considering her obituary says she is 80 years old at time of death. Live endowment record says 25 Dec 1821. I use the 1821 date.
MARRIAGE:
1. Married three times as detailed in the DUP biography cited above. Husbands:
1. Alonzo W. Whitney: 1939 with no location noted. Online Ordinance Index FHL film M514481 which is an extracted marriage record of 30 Oct 1839 from Union County, Ohio for dates between 1820 to 1854; names used were Alonzo W. Whitney and Henrietta Keys.
2. Newell K. Whitney, brother of Alonzo; time only per DUP.
3. Stephen Hales.
