RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. Need to transcribe "The Stiles Family in America : Genealogies of the Massachusetts family : descendants of Robert Stiles of Rowley, Massachusetts, 1659-1891, : and the Dover, New Hampshire family, descendants of William Stiles of Dover, New Hampshire, 1702-1891," which is available on Family Search as a source with Elizabeth Frye.

2. Found the following on the Internet 20 Oct 2009, which needs further research and probably is incorrect:
"Looking for confirmation/proof on parentage of Robert Stiles b.(?)1637/m. Eliz Frye. John Stiles and Mary(?) are not the parents. Robert Stiles b.1611-1710 of Dorchester is really Robert Stilemen, who changed the surname to Stiles. He is father of Robert Stiles b.(?)1637 and twin brother to Richard Stileman b.1611 who lived in Salem MA. Robert and Richard b 1611 are twin sons of Robert Stiles and Elizabeth Lawrence of London Eng. who sailed to MA between 1622-1624 with (?)parents or uncle, Elias Stiles, brother to their father. The twins were approx 11 yrs old. Sources for Robert Stiles parents are: Robert Stileman, England Genealogy; Stileman surname in early history books of New England (America); and, New England (America) Law Court Records 1600's."

3. I looked up the "Great Migration" entry for Francis Stiles to see if there is any relationship. There is no mention whatsoever of a Robert Stiles.

4. "A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England...," by James Savage, 4 vols., (Boston, 1862), p. 195:
"Stiles, Robert, Boxford, m. 4 Oct. 1660, Eliz. d. of John Frye of Andover; was of Rowley 1661, but perhaps rem. to Dorchester, where I find one of this name 1663, yet in my opin. this Dorchester man was older than him of B. possib. but not prob. was s. of John the first; and inscript. on gr. stone is of his d. 2 Nov. 1710, and age, a. 91, that may seem something too high."

5. Henry R. Stiles, "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut," 1892, v. 2, p. 698: "Stiles (Stylles, Stilles). The name is one of those surnames 'which describe the nature or situation of the original bearer's residence' ('Lower's English Surnames,' p. 84), in this case designating a certain person living near a stile (steps or rising path). Thus, by use and in course of time, 'William at (or near) the stile' became William Stile, etc. The word stile is a modernized form of 'Stighle,' the old Saxon word."
