| 237 | BIOGRAPHY: The following biographical material is copied from Years to Remember Watkins Centennial Book, page 150: "A.S. Kimm farmed the place bought by his father on the west edge of Watkins for two years before he married Caroline Schneider* in 1881, who with her parents migrated from Morgan County, Ohio in about 1861 to a home east of the Ervin Schmuecker residence in Iowa County. (See Note below) (Caroline is a sister of Emma Schneider who married Justus Heinrich Kimm 1.7) "Gus" and Caroline Schneider had two sons - Ira A. and Frank. Frank died with pneumonia on February 14, 1885. In 1889 they moved to the east edge of their farm which made them.on the west edge of Watkins. They rented their farm ground to Bill Martin. Gus Kimm owned the land that extended the whole mile from railroad to the Mineard Smith land. The school was included in this. In those days, house moving was a common practice. A,S. moved his farm house to the corner lot west of Watkins Savings Bank. He then built the large home just north of the railroad on the west side of the road in 1900. A.S. Kimm formed A.S. Kimm & Son Livestock Buying and Selling firm in Watkins which lasted until 1912. He also helped organize Watkins Savings Bank, and was a director for over forty years. Ira, his only living son, attended Cedar Rapids business college and completed this course at age 14. On August 30, 1905, he married Laura M. Moeller, daughter of the Henry Moellers, Blairstown. They had six children. Two sons, Ora and Earl, were born in Watkins. In 1911 they moved to Blairstown. There a daughter, Helen, was born. In 1912 they moved to Blairstown and Ire started buying livestock. Three more children were born: Irene, Ross and Arlene. The father, Ira, died of influenza during World War I on October 24, 1918. Irene died in infancy. A.S. Kimm and wife (grandparents) then moved to Blairstown in the spring of 1919 to help their daughter-in-law, Laura, with their son's five children. On June 3, 1920, Laura died leaving grandchildren for the A.S. Kimms to care for. The youngest, Arlene, was given to Mrs. P. A. Snow of Keystone. She was a sister of Laura. The other four were kept together by the grandparents. The grandmother died in 1943." http://kimm.org/henrykimm/August_Silas.htm [Note: Hazelle Keir, schoolteacher and artist, was born September 8, 1907 in the town of Nemaha, in Sac County, Iowa. Upon graduation from high school she taught in a rural school for one year and then attended Iowa State University from which she received a bachelor’s degree in 1931. She married Ervin J. Schmuecker in 1932; together they farmed, raised Angus livestock, and reared three children. Schmuecker taught school in Blairstown, Iowa for six years and Norway, Iowa for fourteen years, retiring in 1972. http://sdrc.lib.uiowa.edu/iwa/findingaids/html/SchmueckerHazelle.htm] CENSUS: 1870 Florence Township, Iowa County, Iowa (Post Office Blairstown) 9 Aug 1870 M593 Roll: 376 Page: 97 Viewed and copy online @ HeritageQuest online.com Harper Wm Y, 37, M, W, Grain Dealer, 5000, 2000, Ills, Harper Emily E., 26, F, W, Keeping House, Wis, Harper Willie H, 10, M, W,Ills Harper Grace M, 6, F, W, Iowa Harper James L, 4, M, W, Iowa Harper Jessie, 10/12, M, W, Iowa, Sept Snyder Caroline, 19, F, W, Domestic Svt., Ohio Note: Parents foreign Birth. They went to Cedarville, New York in Herkimer County. Justus worked as a farm hand until he enlisted in the Civil War after becoming a United States citizen in 1860. He enlisted in 1861 in Company G, 34th Regiment, of the 2nd New York Volunteers under Col. James Suiter. He served two years in the war and fought in battles at Antietam, Fredericksburg and the first Fair Oaks. In 1865 he moved to Benton County, Iowa, along with other members of his family. He married Emma Schneider on December 26, 1866. A member of the family said he saw Emma sitting in a pew with her family when he attended church and said, "Now, there is the girl I'm going to marry." Seventeen children were born to Emma and Gus. Gus delivered all of them. He was assisted by Mayme after she became old enough to help. Sixteen of the children survived to become adults, Dehlia, the seventeenth child, died of diphtheria at the age of five. Emma and Gus farmed for nineteen years on a farm northeast of Norway and then moved to land northeast of Blairstown. They lived on this farm twenty-five years. Gus was a member of the Benton County Board of Supervisors from 1887 to 1893. Pioneer spirit and the desire to help provide farms for his nine sons led Gus to sell his Benton County land and move to Beadle County, South Dakota, where he and his sons purchased 3,000 acres of land. Most of his children also located in the area. His son, Martin, became a member of the South Dakota legislature. When the depression hit the area, family members began returning to Benton County, Iowa. Gus and Emma returned to Blairstown in 1930. Gus was a law-abiding citizen. While serving on the Benton County Board of Supervisors, he is credited with discovering a financial scandal and helping to send the offenders to prison. When prohibition became law, he immediately refused any liquor. He never drank again. He predicted he would die on his ninety-second birthday - and he did. He had planned his funeral and made all the arrangements. His wife, Emma aged 86, died two months later. She was tired and it wasn't much fun living without him. | Emma Schneider

| 243 | RESEARCH_NOTES: "Rosa's tombstone shows she was born in 1864 which I also dispute. According to her marriage license, the 1880 and 1900 census, she was born in 1860, so I well use that date. Her last name on the marriage license and the 1880 census was spelled Schniter. The 1880 census also shows Rosa's mothers name as Regina, but Rosa's marriage license says Rachel as do family members. Her last name of Rothenberger was given to me by family members, and Rosa's marriage license showed Lokenbargh. The 1900 census said that Rosa immigrated to the US 1860.
